In addition to raising settled concrete we repair slabs that have “curled” While this is generally a industrial/warehouse problem that has a lot of fork lift traffic we have repaired residential shops with this problem too.
What is slab curl? Slab curl is something that can happen when concrete cures. When concrete is poured the underside, because of shading, soil moisture and temperature cures more slowly causing the top side to bow up like a dish. At control joints this creates slight voids as the slab lifts off the supporting soil. The result is flexing at the joint when passing loads are placed on it which can cause more settling, damage to the joint and eventual cracking back from the joint.
Slab curl can be a problem in places with heavy vehicle or fork lift traffic and should be dealt with early on to avoid joint deterioration and slab cracking.
The best method for slab curl stabilization is Geo-polymer injection. A dense polymer is injected along the joint filling the void under the concrete. Further repair can include concrete grinding along the high or curled side of the concrete slab which helps extend the life of the repair.
