Trench and ditch breaks by SlabJack Geotechnical

Used to reduce erosion along pipeline trenches, polyurethane is quickly replacing sandbags for several reasons.

First, speed. Trench breaks with foam are much faster to install.

Second, safety. With no need to get in the trench, shoring is eliminated. No need for confined space safety issues. No one in danger.

Third, longevity. Once buried, polyurethane does not degrade over decades unlike bagged sand which, once the bag deteriorates can erode.

Finally, weight. A typical cubic yard of sand weighs in the neighborhood of 2500lbs compared to under 70lbs for trench break foam.

Concrete crack repair and caulking – SlabJack Geotechnical


Cracks in concrete are a common complaint, unfortunately concrete is guaranteed to do two things; get hard and crack.

I read a statement that made me chuckle, it said that every load of concrete comes with four cracks – where they happen depends on the concrete contractor.

There is a lot of truth in that statement. Without the proper placement and depth of control joints, cracks can happen just about anywhere on the concrete slab. In addition, failure to prepare the surface and pour concrete on compacted gravel along with reinforcement such as rebar or welded wire mesh and the odds of slab fractures and displacement go up dramatically.

When concrete does fracture what should you do? The answer has to do with what you intend on doing with the concrete afterwards. If it is a crack in a sidewalk or driveway the best solution is usually to caulk it with a good quality concrete caulk then attempt to blend in with the color with the addition of sand it that closely matches your concrete whether it be broom finished or exposed aggregate.

If your intent is to do a concrete coating or paint afterwards a more rigid repair is called for. Companies like Roadware or Emecole manufacture rigid polyurethane or epoxy crack repair material that do a relatively good job of at least closing the crack which enables the coating or paint to perform much better.

For caulking if you’re comfortable with a non-sag caulk and the tools needed to apply it we prefer high-tech silicone concrete caulking from Silicone Depot. The beauty of silicone caulk is they do not weather like polyurethanes and have roughly 4 times the flexibility of polyurethanes so they are better suited for exterior applications. Another benefit of silicone is it doesn’t have a tendency to bubble like polyurethane caulks do. A quality caulk should last many years if you can avoid pressuring washing at a close range.

While it is not a fun job caulking cracks and joints will pay many dividends. Will reduce erosion and thus more slab cracking will reduce concrete settling and it will stop weed growth and burrowing insects. All in all a lot of benefit from not a lot of money.

One of the most common problems customers tell us about are voids or hollows underneath their concrete. In many cases it leads to settling and worse, cracking, particularly on driveways and garages.

By filling these voids with high density polyurethane foam, settling is reduced, slab fractures are eliminated and years are added to the life of your concrete.

Why do voids develop under concrete?

First let’s talk about what a given cubic foot of soil looks like. You might be surprised to know that roughly 20% of a given amount of soil is simply empty space. The larger the material in the soil (rocks, gravel sand) the larger the amount of void space. This comes into play when water is added to the soil. Whether this comes from seasonal run off, high water tables or simply rain, when soil is saturated and then drains it carries away fine particles. This can further consolidate soil and hence, settling. Additionally, the freeze and thaw cycle also can create voids, this is how most potholes develop on our roadways.

Symptoms of voids –

Hollow sounding as cars, skate boards, balls bouncing etc. are driven, ridden or bounced on it. Water draining through control joints and/or cracks is indicative of developing voids. Deterioration of control joints and cracks because as slabs move against each other small pieces chip off. Cracks.

Acting sooner rather than later saves money and preserves your concrete. It will not be less costly to fix it later.

Cracked exposed aggregate

Your concrete has cracks, now what? Call SlabJack Geotechnical.

Exposed aggregate cracks can be very challenging to seal properly AND make look good.

Let’s first define the purpose of crack sealing. First and most important is to eliminate erosion by stopping water runoff from getting under the slab and eliminate plant growth. Secondly we would like the crack to look better if possible or at least not worst.

Caulking Aggregate cracks is more difficult to make look good due to the texture, especially without the addition of blending materials such as silica, blast sand or play sand.

With the careful application of non sag caulk and by sprinkling blended sand over the caulk we can often significantly improve the appearance of cracks while at the same time reducing erosion and further settlement.

Culvert, Ditch and large diameter pipe sealing and repair



If you are responsible for maintenance for an irrigation district or a municipality we need to talk.

Pictured above is the outflow tunnel for the Concunully dam. Constructed in 1908 the tunnel was starting to show its age. Holes and fissures in one section had begun to erode the supporting soil. A void of roughly two cubic yards had opened up threatening the structure.

Working on short notice due to the season SlabJack Geotechnical arrived onsite and after consulting with the engineer, injected a very slow rise but high density polyurethane that completely filled the void but put very little lateral stress on the concrete that in places was only two inches thick.
