Concrete Trips- Slabjack Geotechnical

According to the National Floor Safety Institute the average medical cost from a slip/trip fall is $22,800! The potential legal costs and jury awards are several times that amount. Rather than ignore the “little trip” have it fixed by Slabjack Geotechnical.

Whether it be a walk from your driveway, a trip on your driveway or a sidewalk by the street, you, the homeowner, not the city, are responsible for maintaining the walk and keeping it free from snow, debris and known hazards such as trips due to settled concrete.

A quick and unobtrusive process, Slabjacking raises settled concrete through the use of an expanding polymer grout. Most jobs are done in a couple of hours and the walk is available for immediate use. No waiting for forms, concrete and curing. No destruction of lawns or plant, just a quick drill, inject and patch.

Concrete crack repair and caulking – SlabJack Geotechnical

 855-752-2522

Cracks in concrete are a common complaint, unfortunately concrete is guaranteed to do two things; get hard and crack.

I read a statement that made me chuckle, it said that every load of concrete comes with four cracks – where they happen depends on the concrete contractor.

There is a lot of truth in that statement. Without the proper placement and depth of control joints, cracks can happen just about anywhere on the concrete slab. In addition, failure to prepare the surface and pour concrete on compacted gravel along with reinforcement such as rebar or welded wire mesh and the odds of slab fractures and displacement go up dramatically.

When concrete does fracture what should you do? The answer has to do with what you intend on doing with the concrete afterwards. If it is a crack in a sidewalk or driveway the best solution is usually to caulk it with a good quality concrete caulk then attempt to blend in with the color with the addition of sand it that closely matches your concrete whether it be broom finished or exposed aggregate.

If your intent is to do a concrete coating or paint afterwards a more rigid repair is called for. Companies like Roadware or Emecole manufacture rigid polyurethane or epoxy crack repair material that do a relatively good job of at least closing the crack which enables the coating or paint to perform much better.

For caulking if you’re comfortable with a non-sag caulk and the tools needed to apply it we prefer high-tech silicone concrete caulking from Silicone Depot. The beauty of silicone caulk is they do not weather like polyurethanes and have roughly 4 times the flexibility of polyurethanes so they are better suited for exterior applications. Another benefit of silicone is it doesn’t have a tendency to bubble like polyurethane caulks do. A quality caulk should last many years if you can avoid pressuring washing at a close range.

While it is not a fun job caulking cracks and joints will pay many dividends. Will reduce erosion and thus more slab cracking will reduce concrete settling and it will stop weed growth and burrowing insects. All in all a lot of benefit from not a lot of money.

What do you do it yourself or hire a local company it’s money well spent.

Slabjack Geotechnical SPI 350H – vs – PolyLEVEL PL250 & PL400

Raising sinking concrete slabs,

When we entered the concrete raising business in 2011 we made a commitment to be on the cutting edge of the industry in order to provide the best value to our clients.

In addition to embracing technology both in our estimating software and with our truck and trailer metering equipment we determined to use the best polymers we could find.

What determines “best”?

1.  Superior lifting ability; After testing Both Polylevel PL250 and PL400 against SPI 350H we found the following differences; The SPI 350H has a much more vigorous expansion. The quick reaction time has a huge advantage; the ability to raise very heavy structures (concrete) without needing massive amounts of material. According to the literature provided with the materials, PolyLevel PL400 and even PL250 do not lift with the aggressiveness of the SPI’s 350H

2. Superior control; With a much faster setting polymer comes much greater control over the lift. This is especially important with smaller slabs such as sidewalks or slabs leaning against a foundation. Simply put the other guys polymers don’t cut it when lifting small slabs, the material migrates to places not desired and the lift is not forceful enough to localize lift to areas desired. Even on larger slabs such as driveways the other polymers create undesirable lift.

3. SPI has formulated 350H exclusively for 1-855-752-2522 the 350H (hydrophobic) is super fast reacting at very low temperatures which provides less off gassing, less chance of charing and superior control.

I could go on, there really is no comparison between the three polymers, the polylevel foam is more like void filling foam and not really up to the task of raising concrete. They are advertised as four pound foams but comparing them side by side they appears to be about half the density of SPI’s polymer. One is structural the other literally breaks apart or crumbles under foot.

You have a choice, Slabjack Geotechnical or some other guys.

Bridge approach raising by Slabjack Geotechnical

18557522522
1-855-752-2522

On of the problems with municipal roadways and bridges  is the settling of the concrete approach just prior to the bridge. The bridge itself is something that rarely settles due to the fact that the base typically goes to bedrock the approach however is normally just laid on compacted gravel and like any slab is susceptible to settling for a variety of reasons such as groundwater migration, erosion and a breakdown of organic layers beneath the concrete.

Slabjack Geotechnical is fully capable of handling these types of jobs. Depending on the size of the approach and the scope of work we can bring two or more complete operational rigs to quickly raise and stabilize bridge approaches, airport runways, loading bays and more.

The many causes of concrete settlement

18557522522
1-855-752-2522

It’s unsightly, it’s dangerous, it’s a potential liability but it’s easy to fix.

Concrete settlement is a very common problem affecting not only residential neighborhoods but municipalities commercial enterprises and industrial facilities. What causes concrete to settle?

1. Failure to prepare the site. If soil was disturbed during construction was it re-compacted? Was there a 4-6″ layer of compacted gravel placed under the slab? These two primary issues are the cause of much of the settling commonly found in new construction.

2. The next most common cause of concrete settlement is excess water. Dealing with water runoff is generally not on a builders mind at the start of construction, it should be. Trying to figure out where you were going to put downspouts, sprinklers and  water features after sidewalks porches and driveways have been poured is poor planning and asking for concrete settlement. Having a place for your run off to drain such as french drains well away from structures or into municipal water supplies if allowed in your jurisdiction will help your concrete remain stable.

3. Another cause of concrete settlement is the breakdown of organic material in your soil. As roots, debris and other organic material breaks down is creates void space that contributes to settlement. Water migrating through the soils takes with it small amounts of soil and sand and these also contribute to the gradual settling of soil.

4. Finally ground water migration can play a role in settlement in some instances particularly if you have a high water table. We did a municipal job where groundwater migration had created a six-inch avoid behind a municipal pool. While there is little you can do about a high water table you can fill voids as quickly as possible so the supporting soils are capable of carrying the load above.

In addition to the above, the type of soil that is predominate in your area plays a role in its ability to support structures. Whether it be sand, clay or silt each has advantages and disadvantages depending on its use. Some soils don’t drain well others are prone to wash out, still others will actually expand as much as 10% with water!

If someone failed in the planning phase and you are dealing with concrete settlement give the concrete raising of leveling professionals a call today.
