Large Diameter Pipe Repair Methods,
We use two primary placement methods to repair large diameter pipes and culverts: spraying and injecting.

Spraying
We spray polyurethanes to rebuild joints that are poorly-seated, have dislodged, deflected or deteriorated. The materials we spray have excellent adhesion to all of the common large diameter pipe materials, such as concrete, HDPE, PVC, galvanized metal & aluminized metal. Sprayed systems are excellent for sealing joints before back grouting (see below) to contain the void filling material outside of the pipe to reduce waste.

Injecting
We inject plural component polyurethanes and single component polyurethanes outside of large diameter pipes to fill voids, fix sinkholes and provide stability. Injection is commonly used for leak-stopping as well.

Deep injection grouting –

Pressure Grouting is the process of pumping a cement or chemical grout into soft or weak strata of soil or voids. The grout fills these voids, thus stabilizing and strengthening the soil. Pressure Grouting has many applications. One of these includes support for existing structures or where foundations have shifted.

1: The purpose of Pressure Grouting is to control the amount of grout going into the pipe. As the process is repeated at additional elevations, the soil is compacted.
2: The process begins with the pumping of grout at the lowest elevation. The pipes are withdrawn slightly and the grout is allowed to set.
3: The process is repeated at the next elevation. Upon completion, the pipe is again withdrawn slightly to the next elevation. The grout is allowed to set. Each level of grout pumping will push the soil upward.
4: The number of grout pumpings at these different elevations that are needed to compact the soil will vary. Once the soil is compacted, it causes lift. This lift then pushes the footing and wall upward.

Pressure grouting involves injecting a grout material into generally isolated pore or void space of which neither the configuration or volume are known, and is often referred to simply as grouting. The grout may be a cementitious, resinous, or solution chemical mixture. The greatest use of pressure grouting is to improve geomaterials (soil and rock). The purpose of grouting can be either to strengthen or reduce water flow through a formation. It is also used to correct faults in concrete and masonry structures. Since first used in the 19th century, grouting has been performed on the foundation of virtually every one of the world’s large dams, in order to reduce the amount of leakage through the rock, and sometimes to strengthen the foundation to support the weight of the overlying structure, be it of concrete, earth, or rock fill. Although very specialized, pressure grouting is an essential construction procedure that is practiced by specialist contractors and engineers around the world.

Chemical Grouting is another common form of Permeation Grouting that has gained popular acceptance to strengthen granular soils is the injection of chemical solution grouts that bond the individual grains together into tone like masses that are capable of carrying loads of the structures. The chemical solutions typically consist of a base material that is mixed with a hardening agent that causes the mix to harden at a predetermined rate, depending on the compounds used and length of set time desired for a particular application.

Chemical grouting is also commonly extensively used in leaking subterranean structures, to control water flow, and to limit ground movement during excavation and construction ( lagging operation), as well as for footing support, grouted tunnel support and for pit excavation below water.

Geotechnical polymers have begun to revolutionize infrastructure repair and engineers are finding more and more ways to utilize the incredible power of polymers. For example;

Culvert and ditch repair; By under sealing ditches and sealing erosion at joints and inlets, ditches, dam spillways and roads are preserved. High water flows often create alternate paths for water. Given enough time or flow and failure of the culvert or ditch is assured. Injecting hydrophobic polyurethane into these voids seals out water and stabilizes the structure.

Concrete road stabilization and leveling; Commonly done at the bridge deck junction or above utility trenches to raise settled concrete roads built above, high density polymer foam is injected   Under the slab to gently raise the roadway back to proper elevation. This process typically takes as few as a couple of days verses weeks for replacement.

Railroad crossings; These are prone to settling which creates a very uncomfortable transition for both train and automobile traffic. High density polymer foam is injected underneath the rail bed, incredibly the polymer supports far in excess the weight of fully loaded trains. Often this can be completed around already scheduled traffic.

Heavy weight bearing slabs often large warehouses which house heavy machinery such as milling equipment and the like. Geotechnical scans are often performed to determine if the slab will carry the weight of the additional machinery and if not a plan to stabilize the sub grade decided upon. The least invasive by far is geotechnical foam. Through a series of injection points, liquid polymer is pumped under the slab. This expands many times in volume and sets to a ridged, high density structural foam capable of supporting thousands of pounds per square foot.

Slabjack Geotechnical has been an industry leader in chemical grouting since 2011.

The injection of high density, structural polyurethane is a fairly recent phenomenon that has many applications. Some of the most common are;

Slabjacking – where high density foam is injected underneath the slab to “float” the slab back to the proper grade. Chemical injection has several advantages over the older method of mud jacking. The ability to consolidate loose and organic materials is one of them. Because it is injected as a liquid it has a tendency to follow voids and fissures in the soil, once the reaction occurs this loose material is consolidated in the polyurethane foam.

Foundation waterproofing – injectable hydrophobic or hydrophilic polyurethane foam is injected through the foundation which creates a curtain wall on the soil side of the slab sealing out moisture. If cracks in the foundation are present holes are drilled at a 45° angle through these cracks. When the chemical is injected it completely seals the crack in addition to forming a curtain wall on the soil side of the foundation.

Void filling – Due to its relative light weight, injectable polyurethane is an ideal material for void filling and vessel decommissioning. Many formulations are available from very light polymers to polymers that are fairly heavy, as much is 40 pounds a cubic foot. For typical void filling under a concrete basement floor or a warehouse floor a good choice would be a structural polyurethane in the range of 3 to 4 pounds per square foot. These typically have compressive strength in the 60 to 100 psi range. Enough to support loads up to 5 tons per square foot.

Trench breaks – typical trench breaks are made of sand bags. While effective there are several drawbacks in the use of sandbags such as; someone needs to be in the trench, which is a dangerous place to be. It can take a significant amount of time to stack up sandbags in the trench and it can be fairly costly. Today there is a better method. Polyurethane trench break foam can be applied quickly and economically without getting in the trench. In addition the same trench break foam can be sprayed over the pipe in the trench as a “rock guard” to protect the pipe.

On of the problems with municipal roadways and bridges  is the settling of the concrete approach just prior to the bridge. The bridge itself is something that rarely settles due to the fact that the base typically goes to bedrock the approach however is normally just laid on compacted gravel and like any slab is susceptible to settling for a variety of reasons such as groundwater migration, erosion and a breakdown of organic layers beneath the concrete.
