Tricks of geo-polymer Slabjacking

Unlike mudjacking, geo-polymer Slabjacking does not generate lift through hydraulic pressure. Geo-polymer Slabjacking uses the expansive force of a chemical reaction, in this case the expansion of polymer foam.

If you have sealed your residential windows with “great stuff” brand foam in a can you have some idea how this works, especially if you bulged your window frame.  Polymers designed for concrete lifting are many times the density of the foam in a can, the material we use is capable of supporting in excess of ten thousand pounds per square foot!

The primary challenge of polymer Slabjacking over Mudjacking is the way one is placed vs the other. Because mud is simply pumped under the slab by a mud pump there is point load created that generally stays right where the pump point is. In geo-polymer injection the material goes in as a liquid that expands, as a result lift can happen at points not necessarily desirable, particularly if there are slopes under the concrete that move the polymer well away from the injection point Geo-polymer Slabjacking is therefore more demanding of the installer and requires much more experience to compensate for the variables that happen on each job.

So why go to the trouble of using a product that is more difficult to predict? There are several good reasons; first, having a material that flows better is generally a good thing as it spreads the load over a wider area which reduces stresses on the concrete. Second the material itself is about a twentieth as heavy as the alternate, as a result, overburden of the supporting soils is greatly reduced. Finally, aesthetically, geo-polymer Slabjacking leaves a nicer appearance with much smaller holes to patch and far fewer of them.

Case study – Settled Concrete pool deck? arghhhhhh!

18557522522
1-855-752-2522

As a concrete raising company we see a lot of settled concrete. Pool decks are some of the most challenging things we do, not that the slabs are different, they aren’t, the reason they are more challenging is the voids that develop along the pool even when the settling appears to be away from the pool and the precision needed to avoid creating additional problems.

As voids are filled, damage can occur to the structure of the pool itself especially on flexible pools such as vinyl or fiberglass. Gunite construction is much more robust so there is not as much concern with them but extra caution is always warranted when dealing with a twenty to forty thousand dollar pool.

How the pool deck was formed is always taken into consideration when writing the estimate. Was it laid over the wall of the pool or abutted, was bull nose tile used, how far away from the pool do the slabs go? Three feet or ten feet? It makes a big difference in how we approach the job and how feasible the job might be.

In the video below we raise a section of deck away from the pool and a section against the pool. Slabs not abutting the pool are generally just like any other walk with little risk of failure for the experienced contractor especially with the monitoring systems we have in place such as slope meters and lift gauges.

Narrow slabs abutting the pool like the ones in the video are often first raised into position with toe-jacks in order to minimize pressure against the pool wall and to avoid any lift at the pool side edge which would open up a gap allowing water over the top of the pool wall under the deck.

When pool decks settle as this one did, slabs often pivot which open up a gap allowing water to seep behind the pool wall which accelerates settling. When the deck is leveled this seam must be filled with pool caulk to seal out water or re-settling will eventually occur.

Case study – Raising a sunken concrete driveway

18557522522
1-855-752-2522

So, you have a settled driveway? We’ve raised a lot of them, here’s a video of one below.

The typical driveway settles against the foundation not the way this one did but either way the process is  the same.

Determine injection port placement for maximum material coverage and drill holes, cut slabs apart if binding is anticipated and inject material to gently raise the drive slab(s) back to proper grade.

On exposed aggregate with the small holes we drill, 5/8″ it will be very difficult to even see where they were patched as we blend color, tint and texture.

Because settling was severe on this driveway we shot additional material in from the side when the slab had been fully lifted, this ensured full coverage of the polymer and less possibility of re-settling.

Let us raise your driveway back to proper grade, eliminate trips hazards on walks and seal control joints and cracks. Call today,

Lipstick on a proverbial pig?

At what point is concrete too far gone to be raised?

When the concrete has bad spalling (top chipping off) or has cracks too close together (10×10 slab with three cracks or more) it is often time to replace, not raise.

In addition to the above, when the base soils are not fairly solid and compacted or if there is deteriorating organic matter such as rotting roots and such, settling will continue until those issues are dealt with.

Slabjack Geotechnical is your trusted expert in concrete raising and leveling  for settled concrete.

RR401g Geo-polymer The slab raising contractors choice

The short video shows our daily use polymer in action, the stuff is incredible!

The polymer, RR401g displaces water as it lifts concrete, as you can see water does not alter its lifting properties at all and it is DOT approved for municipal work on things like freeways so you can rest assured it will hold up under the most challenging of lifts.

How much does Slabjack Geotechnicals poly-leveling cost?

18557522522
1-855-752-2522

“How much does raising settled concrete cost”?

A frequent question we get at home shows, the answer is “how large is the slab and how far has it settled”?

Unlike mudjacking where dirt is used to raise concrete, leveling slabs with polyurethane uses a fairly expensive material. As such we base our estimates on material needed to raise the concrete slab. As a result there are limits when it comes to raising a slab settled many inches due to the cost verses replacement benefit.

So, how much does it cost? We can raise one hundred square feet of concrete for about $300 sometimes less sometimes a little more based on how far it has settled. Porches or extra think slabs will cost more because they are prone to voids under the slab and will require additional material to support.
