How thick should concrete be?

18557522522

Most settled concrete, with a number of cracks in it, has a couple of things in common; it doesn’t have any steel in it (rebar or wire mesh) and it is four inches thick or less.

Concrete has incredible compressive strength making it able to hold tremendous weight but does not have good tensile strength (it doesn’t like to flex) Slabjacking, or concrete lifting, places concrete in a vulnerable position because of its inherent weakness to crack when placed under a dynamic load.

Overcoming this weakness is best accomplished two ways; First, concrete slabs five to six inches thick have a much greater chance of staying in tact when placed under tensile load than do slabs three or even four inches thick. Since concrete is inexpensive, adding two more inches is a very cost-effective way to strengthen its ability to withstand flexing. Second, using an internal structure such as wire mesh, rebar or post tension cables, supports concrete as it flexes limiting movement, and, if a crack develops, limits any vertical differential between the two sides of the crack.

The cost of concrete replacement

18557522522

1-855-752-2522

Concrete is one of the most durable materials in existence. Concrete was used as a building material as long as two thousand years ago and has incredible compressive strength. The only real drawback with concrete is its tensile strength, in other words it doesn’t like uneven support which results in cracks and settling.

The vast majority of concrete we are asked to raise was simply poured on unprepared soil with little or no compaction, no gravel base, no rebar or wire mesh and sometimes only three inches thick. Why?

Simply put, cost. It costs to compact, it costs to used crushed rock as a base and compact it, it costs to purchase and install rebar or wire mesh. Doing concrete as cheaply as possible verses doing it properly can reduce the price nearly in half.

The product, concrete, is inexpensive, about $120 a yard. For a ten by ten patio you only need about a yard and a half of concrete. Crushed rock and re-bar can add another $100 so total materials for a ten by ten patio are roughly $300-$400 The cost on concrete work is primarily labor. For the cheap, dump it on dirt installation? $5 a foot. A quality installation with compaction, gravel, rebar/mesh? As much as $10 a foot which puts that ten by ten patio in the range of $800 for a low-budget job to $1400 for a quality job that will resist settling and look good for decades.

If you are in the market for new concrete hire a concrete contractor that is committed to providing a quality product through and through not just a pretty finish.

Settled interior concrete?

18557522522
1-855-752-2522

Interior concrete that has settled can be a real problem. Basement floors, laundry rooms and garage floors are so expensive to replace. You can see why, demolition has to be primarily by hand with either jack hammers or sledge hammers. Then the material has to be hauled out by hand. With concrete weighing roughly one hundred forty pounds per cubic foot it makes for back-breaking work. The replacement work can be almost as bad, the material can make a big mess as the new concrete mortar splashes up on walls and is not easy to move to remote areas of the room.

1-855-752-2522 raises garage floors and interior concrete.  For a good idea what can be done go to our website www.SlabjackGeotechnical.com  and in the services section, under basement floors, you will see a concrete floor in a vacation home where a pipe broke when the home owners were not home, causing massive flooding and resulted in the floor settling up to four inches. This home, some fifty miles from the nearest concrete plant either needed four hundred square feet of concrete replaced or raised. Demolition and replacement estimates between ten and fifteen thousand dollars would heave been expected with the job taking a full week or more to accomplish. 1-855-752-2522 was called, after a consultation with the restoration company, an estimate of $3016 was provided which included two hundred thirty-two lbs of Geo-Polymer.

We arrived on site 10:00am, pumped two hundred twenty-five lbs of Polymer and completely leveled the floor in two and one half hours! No destruction of the floor, no mess, and available for immediate use.

If you are looking for a solution for settled interior concrete 1-855-752-2522 has the answer. Geo-Polymer injection Slabjacking. Call today.

Repairing concrete cracks

18557522522
1-855-752-2522

After searching high and low for a durable concrete crack repair material and being frustrated by mortars that flake out or flexible caulks that look poor, we have come across a modified two part polyurethane that performs extraordinarily well.

Originally developed for the Air Force it is now available to licensed contractors.

The material penetrates the concrete and essentially “welds” it back together. Any gap is filled with silica sand and saturated with more of the material and topped with concrete dust to blend with the surrounding concrete.

While this concrete crack repair system is not inexpensive, for certain slabs it may make sense to repair rather than replace.

Applications where removal is difficult or cost prohibitive such as pool decks or garage and basement floors are exactly where this system makes sense.

If you are facing a costly “rip and replace” prospect, consider 1-855-752-2522 for your concrete leveling and concrete crack repairing needs.

As you take in all the displays at this years home show and plan for your home improvement projects, make sure you visit our booth, we’ve completely redesigned our home show display this year.

In addition to great information and literature about concrete raising and leveling, we have a video showing the results of the Slabjacking process as we raise a pool deck, patio and entry, you can also view a demonstration video of our new concrete raising Geo-Polymer RR401G, as it sets up in water,  It’s remarkable.

This home show season we are giving away a free concrete raising job so be sure to enter our drawing and you may have your concrete leveled for free this year.

Our last home show of the year is in Spokane at the Spokane County Fair and Expo center April 10th through the 12th – see you there!

New for us this year is our home show display. Matching our web site design, you will see new banners, upright displays, a video presentation of three jobs we did last year and a video of the new Geo-Polymer we use, which you will see poured directly into water and still rise and set up in about twenty seconds, it’s very impressive! We have printed materials for you to take that provides all you need to make an informed decision about concrete raising. If you have wondered how much it would cost to have your patio raised stop by our booth, we are bringing our state of the art estimating software and can provide rough estimates on the spot! We are also donating a free job to one lucky home show participant this home show season so be sure to enter our drawing, you may be enjoying level concrete for free! Our last home show of the year is in Spokane, at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center, April 11th-13th, we’ll be looking for you.

boat launches

Slabjack Geotechnical
Slabjack Geotechnical

I was walking the loop trail in the Wenatchee area this morning and noticed a large void under one of the boat launches.  With the draw down of the pools behind Wanapum, Rock Island and Rocky Reach dams, now is the time to void fill and/or raise concrete boat launches, sea walls and embankments.

In the case of the riverfront boat ramp, with the water down six feet the once underwater ramp is high and dry, an excellent time to take care of this issue without need of anything to catch materials being discharged into the river.  It’s just a matter of injecting our Geo-Polymer from the side of the ramp, a simple fix to what would be a huge replacement expense if the ramp is allowed to collapse.

1-855-752-2522

With the extra late winter 2014,  we are having in Eastern Washington we are starting a bit later this year. Typically we are up and running by Match first, but with the sub-freezing temperatures the concrete slabs are still frozen to the ground!

Please bear with us as we wait out the weather, we anticipate being able to begin work by about the fifteenth of March.

In the mean time we still have three home shows. In two weeks, the third weekend of Match, we have our Yakima and Wenatchee shows, and then in April we have our final show of the year in Spokane. Try to attend, they are a lot of fun and informational as well. Enter to win a free (up to $500) concrete lifting job. Hope to see you there.
